Been feeling under the weather, but can’t quite pinpoint why? Do you experience fatigue, pain, or other puzzling symptoms that disrupt your daily life? If so, you might be one of the many Australians living with an autoimmune disease.

Living with an autoimmune disease can feel overwhelming. At Ideal Care Services, we know navigating these conditions can be frustrating and isolating. That’s why we’re here to empower you with knowledge and support. Keep reading on to find out more about autoimmune diseases and tips on seeking support.

What is an Autoimmune Disease?

Autoimmune diseases occur when the body’s immune system, designed to fight off invaders, mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. This can lead to a wide range of symptoms and affect any part of the body.

According to the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA), a staggering 5% of Australians live with an autoimmune disease. Roughly affecting 1.2 million people, and can strike at any age.

Common autoimmune diseases can include:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: This painful condition attacks the joints, causing inflammation and stiffness.
  • Type 1 Diabetes: The body attacks insulin-producing cells, leading to difficulty regulating blood sugar.
  • Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis: These inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) cause chronic inflammation in the digestive tract.
  • Lupus: This complex disea can affect various organs and tissues, leading to diverse symptoms.
  • Coeliac Disease: An immune reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains, and many more.

Living with an Autoimmune Disease

While there’s no cure for many of these autoimmune diseases, there are effective management strategies. These can include:

  • Medication: Doctors may prescribe medications to suppress the immune system or manage specific symptoms. Please see your GP to discuss your options.
  • Diet and Lifestyle Changes: Dietary adjustments and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly improve well-being.
  • NDIS Support: The NDIS can fund support services like physiotherapy, personal care, and access to specialists, easing the burden of managing your condition.

Please note that, to be eligible for NDIS funding, the disease or medical condition must cause permanent impairment (physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, visual, hearing or psychosocial), resulting in significant disability.
