NDIS 50% Funding Reduction From 1 October 2026: What It Means and How to Plan Ahead
Headlines about a “50% NDIS cut” can be unsettling, but your whole plan is not being halved. The reduction is narrower, it arrives at different times, and you can prepare for it.
What is changing?
From 1 October 2026, two budget groups are being reset through a support determination, a legal instrument made by the Minister:
- Social, economic and community participation supports (previously “social, civic and community participation”): reduced by 50%.
- Improved daily living skills supports (previously “capacity building daily activities”): reduced by 10%.
The reductions apply to those allocations only, not your whole plan, as People with Disability Australia explains. The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has the official detail.
What isn’t affected?
Home supports such as help with dressing, eating, toileting, cleaning, medication and community nursing are not affected. Neither are home and vehicle modifications, mobility equipment and transport, or Specialist Disability Accommodation.
Some supports inside the affected groups are also excluded: employment supports, disability-related health supports, high intensity supports, intensive and complex behaviour supports, customised and wearable technology, and hearing services.
When will it reach your plan?
Not everyone on 1 October. The reduction applies when a plan is created or reassessed from 1 October 2026, and when plans are renewed from 1 February 2027. The government says affected plans will be renewed by 30 September 2027, and the NDIA says it will contact you 60 days before renewal. Until then, you can keep using your current plan.
Why your own numbers matter
The reduction applies to your budget allocation, not necessarily your spending.
Hypothetical example: a $20,000 allocation reset to $10,000 still covers someone who usually uses $8,000, but affects someone who uses all $20,000.
How iDeal Care Services can help
- Plan management: track your funds, pay invoices accurately and see what you actually spend in each category.
- Support coordination: understand your plan, find suitable providers and prioritise the activities that matter most to you.
- Specialist support coordination: extra help for more complex situations.
We can’t change the government’s decision, but we can help you plan around it.
Six steps to get ready
- Check your plan dates: your reassessment or renewal date.
- Compare your budget with your spending.
- Check which supports are excluded (see above).
- Keep your records together, and describe your needs, not just your diagnosis.
- Think before requesting a reassessment. If the NDIA agrees, the reduction can apply to your new plan, even if the NDIA finds your needs unchanged. See our guides on recent reassessment rule changes and how to prepare.
- Read your new plan carefully. If the reduction leaves your 24-hour supports unsafe, you may be able to ask for a plan variation, generally within 90 days.
Good to know
- You can’t ask for a review of the reduction itself, but other NDIA decisions about your plan may still be reviewable.
- The reduction alone isn’t grounds for a reassessment or variation.
- The Inclusive Communities Fund is a separate $200 million program for community organisations. It isn’t individual funding.
