The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) remains dedicated to providing participants, families, and carers with the latest information to access the support they need. As part of this commitment, the NDIA has released an evidence snapshot focused on the effectiveness of assistive technology interventions for children under 9 years old. This resource highlights the importance of early intervention and explores how assistive technology can help children with physical or intellectual disabilities or developmental delays achieve goals related to communication, mobility, and participation.

The evidence snapshot is based on a rigorous systematic search of published literature databases, incorporating 34 reviews, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, scoping reviews, and evidence-based guidelines. This comprehensive approach ensures that the findings are grounded in high-quality research. The snapshot outlines how assistive technology can significantly impact key areas of development for young children, including:

  • Communication and Language: Tools such as augmentative and alternative communication devices enhance children’s ability to express themselves and engage with others.
  • Mobility: Adaptive equipment and technologies support movement and independence at home and in the community.
  • Participation: Assistive devices enable children to engage in activities that foster social and cognitive development.

While the findings demonstrate the benefits of early assistive technology intervention, the snapshot also identifies gaps in existing research and highlights areas requiring further exploration. By addressing these gaps, future studies can help refine and expand the use of assistive technology to improve outcomes for children with disabilities. The NDIA remains committed to sharing such insights to empower participants and their families.
